I’ve been a bum recently when it has come to updating this blog but I wanted to say Merry Christmas to any of my friends and family who might still be reading this. It’s about 11 PM on Christmas Eve here in Tokyo and I must say that it really doesn’t feel like Christmas at all. Sure, some parts of the city are lit up like crazy with Christmas decorations but I’ve got nothing in my apartment and without family it feels quite different. I hope all of you guys back in the States are having a great time though and enjoy your vacation.
For Christmas I’m going to one of my coworkers homes, a fellow gaijin, to celebrate in our traditional style. Christmas is not a holiday in Japan though and I will be going to work. That’s a first!
Here’s a list of what’s been going on with me recently:
- At work I’m working on the initial infrastructure of a new project… can’t give any more details, sorry, other than what I’ve seen of the design so far looks intriguing.
- I bought a Wii and have been playing No More Heroes, Grasshopper’s most recent game, which has its pluses and minuses but as hoped the story and atmosphere are oozing with style.
- Since I haven’t found a gym yet that is close to where I live and reasonably priced (they are really expensive here) I also bought Wii Fit… it’s kinda lame but the best feature to me is simply the ability to weigh yourself with the Wii Board and then have it tracked in graph form over time.
- I finally started a serious search for a more permanent apartment. I think I found a really cool one in Shibuya ward, specifically the city of Ebisu. It’s within walking distance of Daikanyama, where I wanted to live in the first place, but more conveniently located in terms of taking the train to work. It’s also in walking distance to Shibuya proper, where there is a lot of fun stuff. All in all, that triangle of cities is packed with cool shops and restaurants. I definitely could have gone with a cheaper place further out but right now I just felt like this may be the only opportunity to live in a place like that so I might as well do it while I can.
- It’s really cold for me here. Teh Internets are saying that it is similar to SF but I am having a hard time believing that, it feels extremely cold outside already and this is not yet the coldest part of the year at all. I think the temperature averages around zero degrees celsius in February.
- My hair is the longest that it has been in years. I’m trying to grow it out for fun since that seems to be the prevailing style here. When in Rome, do as the Roman’s do… right? Well, at least for now.
- I should be going to GDC. If that’s the case and I know you, lets meet up!
Well, until next time. Enjoy the holidays everyone.
